Christmas is the time to think about one thing: shopping! OK, it’s also a time to think about friends and family and all the things we cherish and hold dearly. But when it comes to the world of apps, now is the period of the year when retail shopping apps take center stage. This year is revealing some interesting new data about the usage of retail shopping apps across various platforms.
iOS users have tended to be the coveted user base for retail apps. It’s believed that iOS customers are more affluent and therefore have an increased propensity for spending money. Historically it has proven to be true. In November of 2014 the iOS retail shopping app landscape was far more robust, active, and lucrative than on Android. The difference one year can make is staggering. While iOS enjoyed a 10 percent year-over-year increase in retail shopping app downloads, Android saw a whopping 50 percent increase. The downloads for 2015 are nearly neck and neck. This is the case in both the US and the UK. It’s possible that many iOS users have already downloaded their preferred shopping apps while Android users are new to the scene, which has resulted in the massive growth. No matter the cause, the results indicate that the mobile commerce scene is greatly maturing.
This mobile commerce maturity gained lots of attention after the Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Single’s Day (China’s biggest online shopping day of the year) numbers started rolling in. Online sales records were shattered during this period. More interestingly was how the time in retail shopping apps was divided between platforms. In the US, the time spent in the top 10 retail shopping apps was 55 percent higher on Android than iOS. These numbers show that many Android users are actively browsing retail shopping apps, yet two-thirds of mobile sales are still made using an iOS device. The evidence indicates that retail apps are being used as a research and browsing method while other methods are used for actual purchases.
What can we take away from all this information? Retail shopping apps are not only growing, but thriving. The shopping experience is increasingly being shaped by mobile channels, so it’s a great time to be a part of the retail app community.
