Now that the holiday shopping season is in full swing it’s a good time to check in on how well retail shopping apps are faring on Apple’s iOS App Store. An analysis by Sensor Tower shows that only one third of the major retail apps analyzed showed a growth in user acquisition between 2014 and 2015. A majority of retail apps saw a reduction in user acquisition. Walmart and Amazon, two of the top companies in the US, both saw increased growth, but companies like Macy’s and Kohl’s saw more than a 40% reduction in user acquisition. It should be noted that almost all of the retail apps saw a slight boost in downloads after Apple released a shopping section in the App Store. Interestingly, Target’s companion app, Cartwheel, saw 244% more downloads than the standard Target app due to its focus on providing coupons and discounts. It seems there’s a correlation between value to the consumer and app downloads.
