While I realize it sounds crazy to create an app in under ten minutes, I wanted to put myself to the test to see if I could actually do it. Could I build an app for a nonprofit organization that could actually be used today to communicate with volunteers, donors, staff members and clients? The answer…Yes! I built an app for Project Hope Alliance in 8 minutes and 39 seconds. I included a primitive video at the bottom of this post, in case you care to verify the claim. However, I do NOT recommend anyone build an app in this amount of time!
To be fair, I didn’t spend much time on the app design. I used a default color scheme and the organization logo. I also used the simplest app layout we have available and created the app buttons using our default icons. You can see the result below. I also already know how to add and edit every feature in our App Builder Engine. But if you were not familiar with our app features and needed to watch a tutorial video for each of the features I used, it would still only take an additional 37 minutes to complete this app.
You might be wondering why I came up with this challenge in the first place. We all know time is a precious resource. Whether you are a Nonprofit Communications Director, High School Principal or Small Business Owner your time is valuable and limited. I wanted to demonstrate you don’t need a lot of time to create a powerful communication tool. A tool that can help an organization retain and build better relationships with its constituents.
I created a checklist which details each feature used, why I used it, where I found the content, and the time it would take to watch each tutorial video. Included in this document is what I added to the app but there are far more features and capabilities available.
|Feature:||Why?||Content (Where is content located)||Training Video:|
|Push Notifications||Quick & Efficient Communication with Clients, Staff and Donors||Categories/Subgroups – for this app I would recommend just one notification category/subgroup unless the NPO would like to segment their communications to clients, volunteers, donors, etc.||Time: 6:10|
|:||Contact Us||Users can easily call, email, view the website, get GPS directions, and refer a friend.||See information in the footer of the website.||Time: 5:10|
|Social Media (RSS/XML Feeds)||One-stop shop for all information relating to the organization. Easy to access different communication channels from one app and share information with the app user’s own network.||
|Fillable Forms||Collect data/information and easily distribute it to the appropriate staff member.||Form Possibilities:1) Request a Speaker2) Volunteer Inquiry3) Internship Application||Time: 4:46|
|Important Docs (PDF Documents)||Access important PDF documents and information while on the go||
