It was big news when Google announced that Google Maps would begin to feature an offline navigation service, but Apple users were left out of the fun. Now, after a month without the service, iOS users will finally have a chance to use Google Maps offline on their iPhones. Users won’t be able to access live traffic information in offline mode, but they will still have access to turn-by-turn navigation as well as store information. Another feature that’s missing in offline mode is the ability to get directions using mass and public transit systems, which is disappointing for residents of cities like New York. Downloading local map data can also take up a good bit of space (300MB for NYC), so it isn’t wise to download a map of the whole world quite yet.
