Not to be outdone by Apple and Google, Microsoft held its own press conference this month where they dropped some pretty big news bombshells. The company unveiled their flagship Windows 10 smartphones, their updated Band smart watch, a new version of their Surface Pro tablet, and (for the first time ever) a dedicated Microsoft laptop called the Surface Book.
Starting off with the smartphones, Microsoft showed off the new Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. The new phones 5.2 and 5.5 inch screens respectively, a staggering 20 megapixel camera, and a USB-C port that promises to charge a phone to 50% battery in only half an hour. The phones also come with some cool new bells and whistles like a dedicated camera button, face-recognition login, and the ability to connect the phone to a Display Dock accessory that allows the phone to become a dedicated computer.
The Microsoft Band 2 is also looking sharper than ever. The device now boasts a gorilla glass, curved screen for maximum protection and ergonomics. Cortana is also part of the package so text messages and other services can be controlled with your voice. The company is also pushing the health aspect of their device with new features like a barometer for measuring elevation and the ability to measure the speed of a golf swing.
The Surface Pro 4 takes everything that was good about the Surface Pro 3 and ups the stats. It’s not an exciting upgrade, but it’s certainly the best Surface Pro the company has released. The real star of the show was the unveiling of the new Surface Book, a laptop/tablet that’s more powerful than an Apple Macbook Pro, their competitor’s top-of-the-line laptop. The Surface Book has a detachable screen that can function exactly like a high-end tablet and boasts 12 hours of battery life and a blazing fast Nvidea GPU with GDDR5 memory. In other words, the Surface Book is a beast.
Microsoft showed off an impressive lineup with its new devices and seems poised to take back some of Apple’s consumer base.
