The numbers are in and online Black Friday sales broke records yet again. $4.5 billion in online sales were logged during the Black Friday period. However, the more significant number is that $1.5 billion of those sales were made using a smartphone. While online sales made via desktop still dominated, the preferred method for browsing was via smartphone. 60% of all online traffic and 40% of sales on Thanksgiving came from smartphones, while 35.3% of Black Friday sales were made via mobile. The numbers indicate that many people use their mobile devices to browse for products, but do not for making their final purchase. This is likely due to the smaller screen size and the continued difficulty for many people to easily complete the checkout process on mobile. As these problems continue to be addressed it’s reasonable to expect the mobile shopping numbers continue to grow.
