If we’ve said it once we’ve said it a thousand times – your app’s name can make or break its success on the app store. Choosing the right name is incredibly important. Your app is your baby and the name you give it will help decide its fate. Instead of arbitrarily naming your app, check out these best practices for helping you understand which names are more successful on the app stores.
Step one is to know your character limits. Currently Google will cut you off after 30 characters whereas Apple gives you up to 255 characters for your name. Pro tip: don’t use all 255 characters. Before you get close to reaching these character limits you need to realize that search results can only show so many characters before the name is cut off. Most app names are truncated after about 15 characters so you’ll want to make sure that you’ve made your point with the first words in your app name.
Having an easily-searchable app is also essential. You’re going to be in competition with thousands of other apps so you’ll need to choose a name that comes up right away when people search for your app’s functionality. Careful not to get wrapped up in a trendy name that’s probably already being used by hundreds of other apps. Yours will be swallowed up in the crowd if you do. Instead you should focus on creating a name that is imbued with strong keywords. For instance, the “Match” app succeeds by having its full name listed as “Match™ – Dating App to Flirt, Chat and Meet Local Single Men and Women”. That app name will pull up search results for any of those keywords. It’ll even show up at the top of the results list when using the search term “dating app”. Although this example features a trademark icon, it’s recommended not to include any special characters in your app’s name since those special characters are not searchable within the system!
As always, you’l want to do some A/B testing of your app name. Fire up Google Experiments or UsabilityHub to see which names are creating the most conversions. Follow these steps and your app will have the strongest name possible.
