What’s the number one New Year’s resolution every single year? Get in shape! That’s why it should come as no surprise that health and fitness apps saw a huge boost in downloads and revenue this month. So who were the big winners from this sprint to download health and fitness apps?
Fitbit and Calorie Counter – MyFitness Pal were the two apps that gained the most from this surge in fitness app downloads. The combination of people putting on weight over the holidays, getting new smart devices for Christmas, and people setting a fitness resolution all culminated in the success of these apps. Fitbit saw a massive download spree after the holidays, which resulted in it hitting number one on the iOS App Store’s download rankings on the day of Christmas and the day after. It was the most downloaded app in the health and fitness category for both iOS and Google Play. This shows that even though many people are buying wearables like the Apple Watch as opposed to a Fitbit, the app itself is still valuable to these consumers.
Fitbit may have had the most downloads, but Calorie Counter – MyFitnessPal was the only app to make it in the top five for iOS downloads, iOS revenue, Google Play downloads, and Google Play revenue when compared to other health and fitness apps. It was the number two downloaded app on both platforms behind Fitbit, but the number one revenue leader on iOS and the number two revenue leader on Google Play. MyFitnessPal has been on the rise since 2015 when it partnered with the Under Armour sports brand, but this holiday season saw big gains for the app thanks to its simple UI, number of features, and overall quality.
These apps were both in the top 50 apps for iOS and Google Play during this holiday period, which is quite the achievement considering the huge competition from games, entertainment apps, and social media titans. Check out the article below for the full breakdown of the stats!
