The world of app store optimization (ASO) has finally stabilized. The initial gold rush has finally settled down and created an economic system that is less boom-or-bust and more dedicated to supporting and investing the future of app development. Stable is a good thing. But now that ASO has become a standard part of the app publishing process it’s incredible how many companies are still making basic ASO mistakes.
When you go skydiving for the first time you have to be literally strapped to an expert. It’s a way to make sure you’re safe and everything goes smoothly. So why do so many companies still try to jump into ASO with no experience or knowledge? Companies are interested in getting big numbers but not interested in getting the education necessary to achieve those numbers. This is a fatal mistake.
Developers also fail to understand that marketing is just as important as quality of product. In most cases the budget should have 50% allocated toward marketing. In reality many developers save about 5% for marketing. Again, this is a big problem. The other problem is that most developers fail to utilize their free marketing power on social media. Having a Twitter account and a Facebook page aren’t enough. Companies need to be actively engaged and transferring social media users into traffic-generators for your product.
Finally, don’t get so hung up on analytics tools. It’s easy to get obsessed with the numbers, but if you don’t take any action then you’re never going to see results. ASO is now a standard part of the process and it’s important that you learn how to use it appropriately.
