Bell Canada, a major telecommunications company, learned this the hard way. The Competition Bureau hit Bell Canada with the penalty after discovering that the company’s employees were told to download two free apps and rate them positively without disclosing that they were employees of the company. The opposition claims that the apps, which were used for account management for existing Bell customers, were free and did not in any way impact or persuade customers to spend money on the company. Due to this, the fine was found to be exorbitant. This issue highlights the importance of ratings and how they affect customer actions.
