Is Apple giving its own iOS apps an unfair advantage in the iOS App Store search results? New evidence suggests that the device used in an App Store search will result in different outcomes for app popularity. When performing an App Store search on a desktop, some of Apple’s apps don’t rank very high within the top 20 apps, yet the same search on an iPhone running iOS 9.1 shows these same apps as being chart toppers. Discrepancies also occurred when searching using an iPhone 5s versus an iPhone 6s. The Apple Pages app ranked differently on each device. Apparently apps that have already been downloaded show up in results as well when they have no business being listed. The problem did not persist when using a device with iOS 8.3 installed. This data suggests that Apple really is skewing results in favor of its own apps, which would be a big deal for third-party developers.
